Family Deported from Canada – Groups fear for their safety
A Mexican family whose father said he had been kidnapped and assaulted by the police in that country at least three times had their refugee claim denied in March of 2012, and were ordered to report to the airport in Montreal for deportation from Canada last week.
The Reyes family arrived in Canada in 2008, running two businesses and volunteering since they arrived. They have two children. Their refugee claim was denied because the Immigration and Refugee Board said the father hadn’t been able to prove the assailants were police officers, that the incidents were linked, nor had he sought help from his own government – although the fact that those who allegedly kidnapped him were federal police may have had something to do with that.
Family deported from Canada in unusual way
Mexicans United for Regularization, a Mexican refugee and immigrant advocacy group, said that they were seriously concerned about the families safety when they returned to Mexico. According to the group, about seven people on average are deported from Canada to Mexico every day. In addition, the group says that there are definite safety risks for deportees from Canada to Mexico, and that there are instances of Mexican refugees who have been deported from Canada being found murdered after returning.
Another issue the group had with the deportation of the Reyes family was that the family didn’t go to the airport like deportees do normally to say goodbye to everyone involved in supporting their case, but instead was ordered to immigration headquarters for transportation to the airport privately.
