Toronto student deported from Canada to Mexico
We reported earlier about a Mexican student facing deportation in Toronto. A Toronto student whose refugee claims were denied and paperwork improperly completed has been deported from Canada, despite the community and various non-profit organizations rallying around him in support.
Daniel Garcia’s immigration lawyer died between filing his refugee claim and his pre-removal risk assessment (PRRA), Garcia attempted to fill out his pre-removal risk assessment on his own with some help from employees at the local library, but never got a response.
Garcia claimed refugee status in Canada because his sister, who was deported in December, is gay. They both feared violence and repercussions in their native Mexico, and his sister’s partner was murdered three years ago because she was gay, after the murder, the siblings fled to Canada.
CBSA Confirms Student Deported on New Year’s Day
Garcia was deported on New Year’s Day, “unwillingly” boarding a plane to Mexico City after being held in an immigration detention centre since December 23rd according to the Canada Border Services Agency. One has to wonder if Garcia would have avoided deportation from Canada if he had been able to have his PRRA out and prepared properly.
