A woman named Domaine Javier appeared on MTV’s True Life and attempted to enter Canada late last year. Javier who is transgender is accusing border officials of not letting her into Canada because she is transgender which could’ve been because of her passport photo and listed gender as male.
After entering customs, Domaine Javier was sent to an area where her luggage was checked and an officer asked to see her passport again. While the officer mentioned that the woman was transgender after reviewing her identification, they continued to search and found three bottles of medication – one of which was unlabeled and full of Vicodin, which is a controlled substance.
In addition, when the officers asked why she was entering the country, she said she was going to casting calls and had auditioned for a web series in for Canada, which led the officers to tell her she needed a work permit and could only enter Canada with the proper work permit – denying her entry to Canada.
Does Domaine Javier Need a Work Permit?
According to articles, Javier was confused about why she needed a work permit and learned from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, her type of work did not qualify.
While MTV star says there is no real reason that she should have been denied entry, there are actually a couple. Regardless of the situation, if any individual’s passport photo looks completely different than their current appearance you may encounter additional questions at the Canadian border or airport. In addition, the Ministry of Transport’s protection program mandates that if someone does not look like the gender that’s indicated on their passport, they cannot fly.
While no stranger to discrimination having been expelled from her religious university after revealing on the MTV program that she was born a male, there are a number of different things that resulted in a denial of entry – from unlabeled controlled substances and the border officers suspecting that Javier was entering the country to work without the proper permit.
