There were many disappointed Canadian citizens and permanent residents last year when the government decided to suspend the parent and grandparent sponsorship program. While the government did introduce the extremely popular Super Visa in the meantime, the program was suspended in order to give the government a chance to clear out the massive backlog.
While the government recently announced the good news of reopening the program on January 2nd, 2014, there will be some significant changes made to the program that you should be aware of should you intend to sponsor your parents and grandparents.
First: There will be 5,000 new applications for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents accepted into the program when it re-opens January 2, 2014.
Second: Canada is still admitting parents and grandparents from the backlog in record-high numbers, and expects to continue doing so over to 2014.
Third: Anyone who wishes to sponsor their parents or grandparents to come to Canada will have to meet new and more strict requirements relating to their financial circumstances and their ability to be financially responsible for their sponsored parents and grandparents.
Fourth: The Super Visa that was introduced will now be permanent, offering parents and grandparents an additional way to come to Canada.
Sponsoring your parents and grandparents to come to Canada is a great opportunity and can be a life-changing experience. However, the channels in which you must do so can be very difficult and time consuming. If you want to sponsor your parents or grandparents, please contact our immigration law firm for help!
