What if your Permanent Resident card expires?
Permanent Resident cards (PR cards) all have an expiration date, and the Canadian government asks that you take steps to renew your card six months before they are set to expire. Many times, however, permanent residents are unable to and end up with an expired PR card.
So what should you do if your PR card expires while you are in Canada? Even if your PR card is expired, you are still a permanent resident of Canada, you just have an expired card. You do, however, need to take a few steps to renew your PR card.
The real obstacles to renewing your PR card occur when you are outside of Canada. To renew your PR card you must be in Canada. The tricky part is that you cannot regain access to Canada with an expired permanent resident card. If this is your case, you will need a travel document to re-enter Canada, and you can apply for this at the Canadian consulate located where you are staying.
Obtaining this travel document is like renewing your PR card because you have to prove to immigration that you gave met the residency obligation in order to maintain your permanent resident status — that you have been in Canada for at least two of the past five years. If you cannot do so, you may have to make a humanitarian case for yourself.
If you need assistance with your permanent resident card give us a call! If your card is expired, you need to renew your card, you need a travel document, or you have not met the residency requirements for permanent resident status, please call or email us. We are here to help.
