Google is highly known for their innovative technology and game changing ideas. Their parent company, Alphabet, is about to change life as you know it.
Alphabet owns an urban innovation company named Sidewalk Labs who is teaming up with Toronto to begin planning a neighborhood designed for the urban life of the 21st century. Sidewalk Labs is investing around $50 million for the initial planning and testing phase. While Sidwalk Labs are investing the initial money, Alphabet has pledged to relocate Google’s headquarters in Canada to the new futurist neighborhood in Toronto. The new futurist neighborhood will be named “Quayside” which will be located on the Toronto waterfront just southeast of Downtown Toronto.
What is Futuristic About Google’s Quayside Town?
In the proposal by Sidewalk Labs, they have promised to do everything from “reduce pollution, commute times and landfill waste to improve the weather. It envisions reducing the impact of wind, increasing shade on sunny days and blocking rain due to smart building design and tree planting.” You may wonder how exactly is a tech company going to control the weather. Sidewalk Labs have explained that their goal is to make the weather more comfortable to enjoy the waterfront in Toronto. They are not only reducing wind forces and increasing shade on uncomfortably hot days, they are promising to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 73%, portable water consumption by 65% and landfill waste generation by 90%. This will eventually make a greater impact on the weather and environment surrounding Quayside.
Transportation is a large part of the project by making everything more accessible. The major ways of transportation will be walking, cycling and shared electric vehicles. This will create a closer community, less pollution, and a healthier life style. Sidewalk Labs intend on making everything in the neighborhood accessible by foot and bike. When people need to leave the neighborhood for any reason, electric vehicles will be available for sharing use. The impact of not having individual vehicles will provide more land use for residential, commercial and other uses.
Of course, since Google is involved in the Quayside project, there will be major technological and internet focus additions. “There will be high-speed communication networks, as well as long-range, low-bandwidth connectivity. The latter is critical for placing sensors in public spaces and buildings to report environmental data such as carbon monoxide, noise, vibrations and temperatures.”
Although the partnership between Alphabet and Sidewalk Labs is starting with a small area of land in Toronto, they are hoping to expand to more of waterfront in Toronto as well as other cities around the world.
