Minister Kenney hints at Intended Family Reunification Program Cuts
According to this Vancouver Sun Article and this article in a major Indo-Canadian Newspaper, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney has mentioned that he plans to make cuts to Canada’s Family Reunification Program.
At a speaking engagement in Vancouver, Minister Kenney apparently indicated that he would like to reduce the number of immigrants to Canada who come to Canada using fraudulent means by cutting the Family Reunification Program, which brings parents and grandparents of immigrants to Canada.
Family Reunification Program Already Cut
The program has already been reduced from 16,000 to 11,000 when the wait time is already up to 13 years for some.
According to the articles on the subject, every community of immigrants and Canadians will feel the effects of this change, including skilled workers who would be deterred from coming to Canada because they won’t be able to bring their families with them.
The author of both articles, Charan Gill of Surrey, British Columbia, says this:
“Grandparents can be an emotional lifeline for many children, and often are the sole influences to transfer values and cultural beliefs. By making it more difficult for grandparents to immigrate to Canada, Kenney is cutting off an important connection. I want to issue an alert to the community to lobby Jason Kenney not to cut this program.”
