Canada is introducing improved caregiver pilot programs to replace the current ones ending on June 17th. Unlike before, the new programs will give caregivers permanent resident status upon arrival in Canada, removing the previous requirement for work experience. Additionally, caregivers will be allowed to work for organizations offering temporary or part-time care for people who need support.
What Are the Requirements to Be Eligible for These Programs?
To be eligible, caregivers must:
- attain a minimum of level 4 based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB)
- hold the equivalent of a Canadian high school diploma
- have recent and relevant work experience
- receive an offer for a full-time home care job
The new programs are easier to qualify for compared to the previous ones. They require a lower language level and don’t need a Canadian post-secondary degree. While some work experience is still needed, the exact details will be announced later.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller said, “Caregivers play a critical role in supporting Canadian families, and our programs need to reflect their invaluable contributions. As we work to implement a permanent caregivers program, these two new pilots will not only improve support for caregivers, but also provide families with the quality care they deserve.”
This shows that the government recognizes the value of caregivers and is working to make it easier for them to come to Canada.
Canada Welcomes Thousands of Caregivers In response to Growing Demand
Canada’s aging population is driving a growing demand for caregivers, and the government is responding. According to the 2024-2026 Immigration Levels Plan, Canada aims to welcome over 15,000 new permanent residents through caregiver programs. Since 2019, almost 5,700 caregivers and their families have already become permanent residents. This comes at a crucial time, as the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence reports a pressing need for caregivers, especially as many caregivers themselves are seniors.
