Canada is reintroducing some visa requirements for Mexican visitors, according to an official. This comes as Quebec’s premier has been asking the federal government to manage the flow of refugees, which he says is stretching resources.
The new rules, set to start on Thursday, won’t completely revert to pre-2016 rules. The immigration minister is expected to provide more details soon.
Previously, Canada lifted the visa requirement for Mexican visitors in late 2016, which improved relations between the two countries. However, there has been an increase in asylum claims from Mexico since then.
In 2023, Canada received 17,490 claims from Mexico, accounting for 19% of total claims that year, up from 7,483 claims the year before, which was 12% of total claims.
Will This Affect Mexican Nationals Who Have US Visas?
Most people traveling from Mexico to Canada will be able to do so visa-free because many of them have a U.S. visa already, Miller said. The application process for Mexican citizens seeking a work permit or study permit will not change.
