International Mobility Program: A Fast Path to Canadian Employment

By Casey November 5, 2024 (Updated November 5, 2024) 2 min. read

The IMP allows Canadian employers to hire foreign workers without the lengthy process of a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This program is designed for positions that offer significant economic, cultural, or other benefits to Canada.

Who Qualifies for the International Mobility Program?

Workers eligible for the IMP include:

How Does the IMP Work: How to Apply

Check Your Eligibility

Ensure you meet the program’s requirements, including:

Receive a Job Offer

Apply for a Work Permit

Submit the offer of employment number and all required documents in the portal.

Wait for Your Results

Once approved, you’ll receive a letter of introduction if you’re outside Canada, or a new work permit if you’re already in Canada.

You can use an account to apply online and check the status of your application.

Canadian Interest Exemptions

One common way to obtain an LMIA exemption is to fall under the category of “Canadian Interest.” To qualify, the foreign national’s employment must either:

  1. Benefit Canadians: Offer significant social or cultural advantages to Canada. This often involves demonstrating a strong track record of success and obtaining endorsements from experts in their field.
  2. Maintain Reciprocal Employment: Contribute to reciprocal employment relationships with other countries, ensuring a fair exchange of work opportunities.

Intra-Company Transferees

Another route to an LMIA exemption is through the “Intra-Company Transferee” program. This allows companies to transfer skilled foreign workers to their Canadian operations. To be eligible, the transfer must:

By meeting these criteria, companies can bring in foreign talent without the need for an LMIA, streamlining the hiring process and contributing to Canada’s economic growth.

Bansuri was very helpful in helping me setup my consultation. She was able to confirm my appointment right away and develop a profile to make the process streamlined. There is a reason why my wife and I have used visa place in twice in the past!

Visaplace was very accommodating to all my questions and emails, and walked me through everything step by step. After many months and a lot of paperwork, I successfully became a permanent resident of Canada and am now living with my wife, the love of my life. They’re not terribly expensive compared to other immigration lawyers either.

Our company needed to fast-track some documents to retain skilled international talent. After shopping around, we settled on partnering with VisaPlace to accomplish this as quickly and efficiently as possible, and they held up their end of the agreement quite well. We will use them again should the need arise.
