Traveling to the 2026 FIFA World Cup? Your Visa in One Host Country Doesn’t Cover the Others

By Michael Niren June 27, 2026 9 min. read

⚠ Time-sensitive — Act now

US B-2 visitor visa processing times at some consulates currently exceed 12 months. The World Cup begins June 2026. If you need a visa to enter any host country, you should be applying right now — not after you buy your tickets.

The World Cup spans three countries — and three separate immigration systems

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the largest in history — 48 teams, 104 matches, and venues spread across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. For the first time ever, fans may need to cross international borders simply to follow their team through the tournament.

The critical detail most fans haven’t thought about: the US, Canada, and Mexico each operate completely separate immigration systems. Being visa-free in one host country does not grant you access to the others. A fan from India needs a US B-2 visa, a Canadian visitor visa, and may also need to verify Mexico’s entry requirements — three separate applications, three different processing times, three different sets of rules.

🚫

Don’t assume — check every country individually

A common and costly mistake: fans assume that because they’re visa-exempt in the US under ESTA, they can also enter Canada without a visa. This is not the case. A valid US ESTA does not give you entry to Canada or Mexico. Each country has its own list of visa-exempt nationalities, its own application process, and its own processing timelines.

Host Country Requirements

Entry requirements by host country

Here’s what you need to know to enter each of the three host nations for the 2026 World Cup.

🇺🇸

United States
11 venues incl. Dallas, LA, New York, Miami

Visa Waiver Program (ESTA)Citizens of 42 VWP countries apply for ESTA online — $21 USD, approved within minutes.

📋

B-2 Visitor VisaRequired for all other nationalities. Processing can exceed 12 months.

⚠️

Apply immediatelyDemand will surge in 2026. Many consulates have year-long waitlists already.

🇨🇦

Canada
3 venues — Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)Visa-exempt nationals flying to Canada need an eTA ($7 CAD). Not required crossing by land from the US.

📋

Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)Required if your country is not on Canada’s visa-exempt list. Apply online through IRCC.

🔑

US visa holders — special ruleHolders of a valid US visa may be eligible for eTA instead of a full TRV. Check with IRCC.

🇲🇽

Mexico
3 venues — Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey

Visa-free for most nationalitiesMexico allows visa-free entry for citizens of most countries including the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia.

📋

Mexican Tourist Card (FMM)All visitors must complete an FMM entry form (now largely electronic). Keep your copy for exit.

🔍

Confirm your statusA small number of nationalities still require a Mexican visa. Verify before traveling.

Common Scenarios

Fan travel scenarios — what you actually need

These examples cover the most common situations fans will face when traveling across multiple World Cup host nations in 2026.

Your nationality Entering USA Entering Canada Entering Mexico
🇬🇧 UK citizen ESTA (VWP) eTA required Visa-free
🇮🇳 Indian citizen B-2 visa required TRV required Visa-free
🇧🇷 Brazilian citizen B-2 visa required TRV required Visa-free
🇦🇺 Australian citizen ESTA (VWP) eTA required Visa-free
🇳🇬 Nigerian citizen B-2 visa required TRV required Check requirements
🇲🇽 Mexican citizen B-2 visa required eTA or TRV (check) Home country
🇩🇪 German citizen ESTA (VWP) eTA required Visa-free

The ESTA vs eTA Confusion

The most common mistake: confusing ESTA and eTA

ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is a US programme. eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a Canadian programme. They are completely separate systems with different eligibility criteria, different fees, and different application processes. A fan from Australia needs to apply for ESTA to enter the US and a separate eTA to fly into Canada — two different online applications.

Similarly, some nationalities hold a B-2 US visa but have never checked whether they need a Canadian visitor visa. Holders of a valid US visa may qualify for a Canadian eTA rather than a full visitor visa — but this is not automatic and you must still apply separately through IRCC.

When to Apply

Act now — processing times are the biggest risk

1
Identify which countries you need entry to
Look at your match schedule and travel itinerary. Which of the three host countries do you need to enter? Ground travel between the US, Canada, and Mexico still requires immigration compliance at each border crossing.
2
Check your visa requirement for each country
Use official government websites: USCIS.gov (US), Canada.ca (Canada), and gob.mx (Mexico). Or book a VisaPlace assessment — we’ll check all three for you in one consultation.
3
Apply for visas immediately — do not wait for tickets
US B-2 visa processing at some consulates is already over 12 months. Canadian TRV processing varies. Apply now. You can buy tickets later. You cannot speed up a consulate.
4
Book ESTA and eTA last (if eligible)
If your nationality qualifies for ESTA and/or eTA, these are fast — usually approved within minutes. Apply at least 72 hours before travel.
5
Carry all your travel authorisations
Print or save digital copies of all visas, ESTA approvals, eTA approvals, and travel documents. Border officers may ask to see them at each crossing.

Pro Tips

What smart World Cup travelers are doing now

  • Apply for visas before buying tickets. Do not commit to non-refundable match tickets and flights until your visas are approved — particularly for the US and Canada.
  • Plan for border crossing delays. Millions of international fans will cross the US-Canada and US-Mexico borders during the tournament. Factor in significantly longer wait times.
  • Check your passport expiry. The World Cup runs into July 2026 — your passport should be valid until at least January 2027.
  • A Canadian eTA is required even for visa-exempt nationals flying in. Crossing by land from the US does not require an eTA, but flying into any Canadian airport does.
  • Criminal records can affect entry. A DUI or drug offence can make you inadmissible to the US or Canada regardless of visa status. Consult an immigration lawyer — waivers may be available.
  • FIFA fan IDs are not visas. Fan identification documents do not replace visas or travel authorisations. You need both.

Frequently Asked Questions

FIFA World Cup 2026 visa FAQ

Do I need a visa to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA?
It depends on your nationality. Citizens of the 42 Visa Waiver Program countries can travel to the US visa-free by applying for ESTA online ($21 USD). All other nationalities must apply for a B-2 tourist visa at a US consulate. Processing times at some consulates already exceed 12 months — apply immediately.
Does a US visa let me enter Canada or Mexico for the World Cup?
No. The US, Canada, and Mexico each have completely separate immigration systems. A US visa — whether B-2 or ESTA — does not grant you entry to Canada or Mexico. Holders of a valid US visa may qualify for a Canadian eTA rather than a full visitor visa, but you must still apply separately through IRCC.
Do I need a visa to attend matches in Canada?
Canada requires either a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) depending on your country of citizenship. Visa-exempt nationals need an eTA to fly into Canada (not required to cross by land from the US). If your country is not on Canada’s visa-exempt list, you need a TRV regardless of how you enter.
Do I need a visa to enter Mexico for the World Cup?
Mexico is one of the most open countries for international visitors. Citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and most Latin American countries do not need a visa. All visitors must complete an entry form (FMM) on arrival. A small number of nationalities still require a Mexican visa — verify your status before traveling.
When should I apply for a World Cup 2026 visa?
Immediately. US B-2 visa processing times at some consulates exceed 12 months. Canadian TRV processing varies by country. Do not wait until you have match tickets — apply for your visas first, then book tickets once approved.
Can I drive between host cities in different countries?
Yes, but you must comply with immigration requirements at every border crossing. Driving from Los Angeles to Vancouver means crossing the US-Canada border — you need valid entry documents for Canada. Driving from Dallas to Monterrey means crossing the US-Mexico border — you need valid entry documents for Mexico.
I have a criminal record. Can I still attend the World Cup?
A criminal record can affect your admissibility to the US and Canada. Even a DUI conviction can result in entry denial. Waivers are available for some situations. Contact VisaPlace well in advance if this applies to you.
