The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that Belize will once again be eligible for the H-2A and H-2B visa programs. This decision, effective November 8th, will allow Belizean workers to fill temporary agricultural and non-agricultural jobs in the United States.
Why Was Belize Previously Banned?
Belize was removed from the H-2A and H-2B programs in 2018 due to concerns about human trafficking. However, the country has made significant progress in addressing these issues and has been upgraded to a “Tier 2” status by the U.S. State Department. Additionally, Belize has maintained a low visa overstay rate.
What Are the H-2A and H-2B Visa Programs?
- H-2A Visa: This program allows U.S. employers to hire foreign workers for temporary agricultural jobs, such as planting, harvesting, and packing crops.
- H-2B Visa: This program allows U.S. employers to hire foreign workers for temporary non-agricultural jobs, such as landscaping, construction, and hospitality.
Both programs are designed to address labor shortages in specific industries and ensure fair treatment of foreign workers.
