The DACA program continues under the Trump administration. New information from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services revealed that the administration reinstated work permits for 107,000 DACA beneficiaries and 17,000 DACA applicants were granted approval by the administration. Arrests continue to occur under Trump as a handful of Iraqi Christians were arrested in the state of Michigan on Sunday. The administration claimed that these arrests involved individuals with criminal histories and were therefore warranted. Regardless of the justification regarding these arrests, people were seen protesting outside of a detention center in Michigan as a result of their disaccord with ICE officials. The immigration attorneys of those who were arrested by ICE ended up filing motions to halt the deportation process for the Iraqi Christians who sought legal help. Many of those who were arrested face dangerous situations in Iraq and their legal defenses against deportation seems more crucial now than ever.
New research revealed that immigrants are vital to the trucking industry because of the lack of US-born individuals willing to work in the industry. We have heard similar information throughout the last couple of months ranging from the importance of immigrant workers in the horse racing industry to the technology industry in the United States. In other news, a city ordinance in Boston was brought forth this week in support of making schools in Boston “sanctuary schools,” which would protect students from ICE officials while inside the public school system. This comes during a time when the term “sanctuary” is popular among immigration activists and cities that seek to protect immigrants. Additionally, business leaders in Chicago urged Governor Rauner of Illinois to sign the Illinois Trust Act—an act that would serve to protect immigrants from being questioned about their immigration statuses by local law enforcement.
Numerous tech companies are opposed to the position that the Trump administration has taken on immigrant work visas. There is already a talent shortage in the tech industry, and the administration may make the immigration atmosphere worse with their strict mentality regarding immigrant workers. So, in light of this, tech companies have implemented some solutions to help qualified immigrants secure visas in order to bring their creativity to the United States. In further news, California is directly opposing the Trump administration’s stance on immigration detention centers. Through their budget, they are attempting to restrict the local government from cooperating with the federal government in their desire to expand detention centers in California. They also hope to create formal inspections of the conditions in the detention centers throughout the state.
