Canada’s new 10-year visa has created a significant impact on the latest housing booms in both Vancouver and Toronto. In 2015, Canadian immigration officials created and issued 390,000 10-year, a multi entry visa to residents of Mainland China. The officials also offered another 162,000 visas for people from India. The multi entry visa has caused a chain reaction in the real-estate market. Not only are these people investing in real estate in cities across Canada but they are also bringing their families who will eventually invest as well. Many of the wealthy foreign nationals are employing their international student children “as channels for investing in real estate, they say, noting there are 130,000 international students in British Columbia, 51,000 of whom are from Mainland China”. An immigration lawyer added “Some people are transferring their wealth to their dependents and then relinquishing their permanent resident status in Canada. They’re applying instead for 10-year visitors visas,”.

It is not a secret that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is a friend of immigrants and refugees but immigration specialists say he had a wake-up call earlier this week. There has been a recent influx of illegal refugees flooding into Canada by crossing the border into Quebec, and Canada hasn’t been ready for this significant increase. So many refugees, mainly Haitians, have crossed the border this month that Montreal opened the old Olympic Stadium as a “welcome center” for refugees. Despite the Trudeau’s past enthusiasm for immigration, it appears he has changed his tune. “We want migration to Canada to be done in an orderly fashion; there are border checkpoints and border controls that we need to make sure are respected,” Trudeau said. The Canadian Immigration Minister, Ahmed Hussen, also commented on the refugee increase, “We are ensuring that the capacity to deal with these refugees is in place and our immigration system remains strong and robust.”

Immigration specialists analyzed the difference between immigrants headed to Canada vs. America. According to statistics from both countries immigration agencies, immigrants in Canada are younger, better-educated, and far more likely to be selected for economic reasons. In the 2015 report by the ORganization for Economic Cooperation and Development, it stated that US immigrants are to earn less and five times more likely to live in a poverty setting than immigrants in Canada. A Heritage Founder scholar, James Carafano, said that Canada partially protects its more generous social welfare programs by maintaining an immigration system that is more selective about which immigrants come to Canada. “If you add a bunch of people to the safety net who aren’t contributing to the net, that adds a stressor,” said Carafano.
