In US immigration news this week, there were discussions over the uncertainty of the DACA program in the US. Will the government keep the program or eliminate it? That remains to be seen, but advocates have been gearing up to defend the program by holding press conferences, rallies, and events that support saving DACA. Furthermore, the New York Times reported that the US actually needs more low-skilled immigrants in the workforce. Over the past several months, we have heard constant comments about the threat of undocumented immigrants taking away American jobs. However, the administration may be incorrect in its assessment of low-skilled immigrants. According to the Times, the cheap labor offered by low-skilled immigrants increases economic output and decreases prices. Economic analysis cannot go unnoticed by the administration. In other news, a new report from the National Conference of State Legislatures revealed that US states have passed more immigration-related laws in 2017 than in 2016 altogether. Lawmakers claim that the Trump administration’s inaction regarding immigration reform has caused states to focus more on immigration laws.
Romulo Avelica-Gonzalez’s immigration case has garnered national attention. He has lived in the US for 25 years and was arrested one morning after dropping off his daughter at school. This week, an immigration appeals court remanded his case to the lower court. He may still be deported. However, it may take several years for a court to make a decision on his case. Moreover, Bernalillo County in New Mexico has disregarded the threats from the federal government by deciding to maintain a policy that would establish the county as a “sanctuary” for immigrants. The past months have shown us that the government has been threatening states by claiming that it will take away federal money if states do not cooperate with the administration by cracking down on illegal immigrants. There are two sides to this debate: those who claim that cracking down on illegal immigration will have a negative effect on communities and those who claim that it will be positive for America.
