Each week we collect stories related to US immigration, and we provide a brief summary of each story in our weekly blog edition. Below you will find snapshots of stories that range from Trump’s administration to changes in US immigration laws. We then give you fresh links at the bottom that relate to each story within our summary. Let’s dive in!

Stories from the Border

On Monday, a federal court in Texas will decide the fate of the controversial Senate Bill 4, which would require local authorities to fully cooperate with federal immigration officials if implemented throughout Texas. The bill continues to draw criticism as more advocates join the fight against the enforcement of this notorious “show me your papers” law. Critics claim that the new law will encourage racial profiling and create police cities throughout Texas. Moreover, hundreds of mayors will be gathering in Miami to fight the tough immigration restrictions implemented by the Trump administration. Mayors are also against bills such as Senate Bill 4 because of the fear it may generate for people who want to report crimes. They may not come forward if they are undocumented immigrants and have witnessed a crime.

Portland joined the immigration advocacy message this week by approving legal services for immigrants at the Gateway Center for Domestic Violence Services.  The services are meant to provide relief for immigrants and refugees who are also victims of domestic violence. Additionally, students at Missouri State University volunteered by serving refugees and immigrants in San Antonio, Texas. Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) is located in San Antonio and seeks to assist immigrants and refugees who have fled their own countries. New research this week combated the notion that immigration leads to crime. Over the course of three years, two researchers studied the relationship between immigration and crime and concluded that in general, there is no connection between immigration and crime. One of the researchers claimed, “So many of the current executive orders and policies are based on this idea that immigration causes crime, but that narrative is simply false.” Furthermore, the Journal of Economic Geography came to the conclusion that a diverse immigrant population in the workplace actually increases wages and boosts productivity. This highlights how integral immigrants are to the American economy, and research continues to support this notion.

Mayor Bill de Blasio defended NY immigration policies and claimed that the city will comply with federal immigration law to the extent that is necessary. However, they are still standing firm in their mission to protect the immigrants who live in their city. Moreover, pastors throughout Texas are serving the immigrant communities throughout the state by visiting families and offering programs. Because of drops in the number of people attending church services on Sunday, these pastors have made it a point to reach out to the immigrants who need help during this strict immigration time in Texas.

Visa place helped me with my daughter’s sponsorship 3 years ago. Last week I contacted them for some clarification on a different matter. It was about an issue which technically was a problem of CIC’s software glitch and had nothing to do with Visa Place.
Yet Reena Sandu was assigned for my case. she helped me with enthusiasm and showed no hesitation despite me being an ex-client from 3 years ago.
I was very happy that even after 3 years of finishing business, Visa Place were respectful of their clients. Special thanks again to Reena for her enthusiasm and support.
