Changes to the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program

Canada has proposed changes to the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program. Cuimmigrant-refugee-programrrently, people may sponsor refugees from abroad. These people who sponsor refugees can include groups of five or more Canadians or permanent residents as well as community organizations.

What Documents Do You Need For The Private Sponsorship of Refugees Programs

Currently, visa officers review sponsorship applications and later permanent residency applications, but the proposed changes would be that the officers review both the sponsorship applications and the permanent residency applications at the same time.

Another change would be that the refugees being sponsored could only be recognized refugees by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees or a State.

“These proposed changes would result in faster processing times, thereby improving the efficiency of the PSR (Private Sponsorship of Refugees) Program,” says Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney in a press release last week.

“CIC currently lands more than double the number of privately sponsored refugees than in 2000,” said Kenney. “For the continued health of the program, we need to ensure that we respond to both the protection needs of the refugees and the priorities of private sponsors across Canada.”
