Toronto Police Reject “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Immigration Policy

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell for Toronto Immigration

Despite pressures from organizations such as “No One is Illegal,”  the Toronto Police Services Board rejected a proposal that would have prohibited his officers from telling federal authorities if they suspect immigration law violations.

Toronto Police reject “Don’t Tell”, already have “Don’t Ask”

The Toronto Police already has a “Don’t Ask” policy, which means that police officers should not ask victims and witnesses about their immigration status.

Immigrant advocates had hoped to add a ‘‘Don’t Tell’’ component.  That is, they had hoped that police officers would not tell immigration authorities if they find out someone does not have legal status in Canada.  The Toronto Police Services Board was considering adopting such a policy, but rejected this idea yesterday.

Those who may now be vulnerable include: those whose visas have expired; those who haven’t  filed for refugee status yet or whose claims have failed and subject to appeal; those with pending cases that haven’t been settled yet; and those who may have been lost track of by authorities.

Visa place helped me with my daughter’s sponsorship 3 years ago. Last week I contacted them for some clarification on a different matter. It was about an issue which technically was a problem of CIC’s software glitch and had nothing to do with Visa Place.
Yet Reena Sandu was assigned for my case. she helped me with enthusiasm and showed no hesitation despite me being an ex-client from 3 years ago.
I was very happy that even after 3 years of finishing business, Visa Place were respectful of their clients. Special thanks again to Reena for her enthusiasm and support.
