Manitoba’s population has increased by 16,227 people within the last 12 months, which is the highest population increase experienced by the province within the last 40 years. The majority of the new additions were immigrants, or 15,199. This is the highest number of immigrants to Manitoba since just after the Second World War.
Manitoba has not been overly popular with immigrants in recent years, having colder winters without any large coastal cities. However, it does have a Provincial Nominee Program that allows workers to to obtain permanent residency in the province, which is where many of the immigrants came from.
Manitoba asks for higher cap on Provincial Nominees
The Provincial Nominee Programs in each province have their caps, meaning only a certain number of immigrants can be admitted to each province every year under these programs.
Manitoba is currently requesting the Federal Government raise their cap, from the current 5,000 to at least 20,000 by 2016.
