We recently posted an article about how Asian immigration to Canada has been positively influencing Canadian eating habits.
Now, new Statistics Canada data is saying that immigrants are overall much healthier than Canadians in general.
According to this CBC article, the mortality rate for immigrants is much lower than that of Canadians who were born here.
Now, the data might be skewed slightly as immigrants must face rigorous health examinations before they can come to Canada and therefore must already be “healthy”.
One other interesting point is that the longer immigrants live in Canada, the less healthy they become. There isn’t much known as to why this is the case, but a lot of it might have to do with the availability of fast food and a less active lifestyle in Canada than immigrants are used to. In other words, as immigrants live in Canada longer, they become more like Canadians in their daily habits.
