Enrolling Your Children
Depending on the Province or Territory, public education begins at the age of four or five. Children must remain in school until the age of 15 or 16 (mandatory) this varies according to each Province or Territory.
There are different steps you will have to take in order to enrolled your child in school when you arrive:
Register Your Child(ren) in School
There is different documentation you will need in order to enroll your child in school
- Permanent Resident Card, Record of Landing, or Confirmation of Permanent Residence
- Your child’s birth certificate
- Your child’s vaccination certificate
If you have any records from your child’s previous school, this will also be beneficial. If the documents are in a language other than English or French, you should have them translated.
New Student Assessment
There may be a chance that because your child has arrived from another country they will need to be tested before they can enroll in a school. This is needed in order to gather further information about your child and what they have already learned. This test will assist the teachers in further understanding the needs of your child.
Transportation
Most schools are not in walking distance of ones home. If this is the case there are buses provided by the school at very little or no cost to you. Depending on where you reside your child may also be able to take public transportation. You may also arrange for a car pool or to have another parent transport your child to school if possible.
