Common Questions About Summer Jobs in Canada as an International Student

If you’re an international student staying in Canada this summer, you might be wondering about job opportunities while you wait for fall classes to start. Remember, you can only work in Canada without a separate work permit if your study permit specifically allows it. Check your study permit to see if you’re allowed to work on campus, off campus, or both. If your permit doesn’t mention work authorization, you’re not allowed to work in Canada. Below, we will answer some of the most popular questions we receive about working in Canada as an international student.

What Documents Do I Need to Work in Canada as a Student?

To work a summer job in Canada as an international student, you will typically need:

Essentials

Standard Job Application Materials

Additional Documents (Potentially Required)

Do I Need a Work Permit?

Yes, but only under specific conditions.

On-Campus Work

To work on campus without a work permit, you must meet the following criteria:

Off-Campus Work

If you’re an international student in Canada and want to work off campus without a separate work permit, you must meet specific requirements:

Does Canada Have a Policy for Work Hours

Before you start your job search, it’s important to understand how many hours you’re allowed to work as an international student. This depends on the time of year and whether you’re taking classes or on a scheduled break.

Summer is usually considered a scheduled break, unless you’re taking courses. During scheduled breaks, you can work full-time.

Currently, the weekly limit is 20 hours during school terms, but this will increase to 24 hours in the fall. Note that this is a change from a temporary policy that allowed more than 20 hours during school terms, but that policy ended on April 30, 2024.

What Kind of Jobs Are Available to International Students?

As long as you meet the requirements for working on or off campus (mentioned above), you can explore any type of job that interests you.

Anis did a great job of listening to my situation and getting an attorney to talk to me right away, so I can cross the boarder without worrying about what they might ask me. He was kind and understanding and I look forward to working with him and his company in the future.

Bansuri was very helpful in helping me setup my consultation. She was able to confirm my appointment right away and develop a profile to make the process streamlined. There is a reason why my wife and I have used visa place in twice in the past!

Visaplace was very accommodating to all my questions and emails, and walked me through everything step by step. After many months and a lot of paperwork, I successfully became a permanent resident of Canada and am now living with my wife, the love of my life. They’re not terribly expensive compared to other immigration lawyers either.
