An LMO, or Labour Market Opinion, is something that companies must obtain before they can hire a foreign worker. LMOs can be obtained for a specific worker or position, or be a pre-approval for a series of positions.
Understanding the LMO
What an LMO does is ensure that there are no Canadians available in the area to do the job you are hiring for, which allows you to then bring in foreign workers.
Who does not need an LMO?
There are several different types of categories of foreign workers that do not need an LMO before they can work in Canada. These include workers covered under international agreements (including traders and investors under certain international agreements), workers nominated by a province for permanent residence, entrepreneurs, those in exchange programs, co-op students and the spouses of certain foreign workers.
How to obtain an LMO in Canada
You need to request a Labour Market Opinion (LMO) from Service Canada in order to obtain an LMO, and to do so you need to submit an application. A licensed immigration lawyer can assist you in the application process and any other corporate immigration needs you and your business may have.
