This week Arton Capital’s Passport Index ranked countries passport scores to determine how easy it is to travel with that passport. Canada ranked number five with a visa-free score of 154. The score of 154 means that people who hold a Canadian passport can travel to 154 countries without a visa and/or can be granted a visa upon arrival. This is great news for Canadians considering they are typically known to be “travel-hungry” people.
Next week Canada holds the Canada Open Gran Prix badminton tournament. India’s shuttler, Sameer Verma has been left disappointed as he had to withdraw from the Open. “I have to withdraw from the Canada Open GP as I couldn’t procure my visa in time, really disappointed as I was really looking forward to paly at Calgary,” Sameer wrote on his Facebook page. He also went on to say “as international athletes I think we shouldn’t be facing visa issues but again it is not something which I could do about it, will be playing in the US Open GPG next week,” Do you agree, do you believe that international athletes need to go through visa processes to compete in world competitions?
Effective August 1st, 2017, the Legal Services Society of B.C. will no longer accept applications for immigration and refugee cases because government funding hasn’t been able to keep up with the increase of refugee claims. Legal aid will cease to be provided to both immigrants and refugees in British Columbia, Canada. Many immigration specialists and lawyers have said that they fear that this will cause many people to be at risk of deportation. The reason many immigrants could be in jeopardy for deportation is that they will no longer have the legal aid to pay their immigrant lawyers to proceed with their cases. A refugee from Uganda, Alfred Okot-Ochen, applied for asylum in Victoria in 2003. Alfred stated that he would not have been able to “navigate the complicated paperwork without a lawyer funded by legal aid.”
