This week marks the 5th anniversary of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). Many of the people who benefit from the program have scheduled protests against those who oppose DACA. A partnership among different states led by Ken Paxton, Texas Attorney General, is prepared to take legal action if the Trump administration does not do anything to eliminate the program. Once again, the state of DACA remains unknown along with the fate of thousands of immigrants who benefit from the program. On Tuesday, DACA supporters gathered outside of the White House for a demonstration in support of Barack Obama’s immigration policy. On Wednesday, the Trump administration started to renegotiate NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). During his campaign, President Trump had plans to eliminate the deal, but he has concluded that he will actually renegotiate with Canada and Mexico. Moreover, on Monday, California claimed that they will be suing the U.S. Department of Justice because of the Trump administration’s restrictions on federal grants for sanctuary cities. California is the first state to challenge the administration over public safety funds, and its challenge marks the continued tension between sanctuary states and the federal government.
In other news, the Los Angeles Police Department has a history of building relationships with the city’s immigrants. This year, there has been greater than 150 meetings in schools, hospitals, and churches, among others. The LAPD has hosted “know your rights” meetings and have reaffirmed the city that it does not work with the federal government in order to deport people. Moreover, the salaries of H-1B holders have risen to $80,000, which marks the first time that the US has publicly released information on H-1B salaries. Ten years ago, H-1B salaries were at $69,000. The rise in salaries is a win for high-skilled foreign employees. Lastly, the city of Denver in Colorado has supported an ordinance that would protect the city’s immigrants from deportations by the federal government. They have done this even though the Trump administration has threatened to take away federal funds.
