The United States came together as whole to protect its immigrants this week. Volunteer rates and donations have soared in light of the current immigration climate. In fact, the most extensive immigration advocacy group in the US, National Council of La Raza, plans to change its name to, “UnidosUS,” which stands for “UnitedUS.” The organization claims that the name is a “call to action” for Hispanics in the US and those who support immigration. In other news, Amilcar Valencia—executive director of the volunteer ministry, “El Refugio,”—advocated on behalf of immigrants during a speech that highlighted the importance of finding better ways to detain immigrants. At immigration detention centers throughout the country, there are immigrants with no criminal histories who are being detained. Valencia is only one of many people throughout the country that are attempting to shine a light on this US immigration issue.
The city of Phoenix is considering policies that would prevent officers from questioning an individual about his or her immigration status. The policies would also prohibit school officers from contacting federal immigration authorities while in a school. Moreover, President Trump’s immigration policies have ironically worked in favor of immigrants, to an extent. More immigrants have applied for US citizenship as a result of the fear created by the administration. With the help of law clinics, advocacy groups, and immigration advocates, many immigrants have easily navigated the naturalization process. Furthermore, Mayor Michael Hancock of Denver has taken measures to protect the city’s immigrants. ICE agents in Denver, Colorado, have been arresting undocumented immigrants at courthouses. Initially, the mayor asked ICE to stop and when ICE didn’t, the mayor decided to prevent people from going to courthouses altogether. This includes allowing people to pay for speeding tickets online in order to avoid appearing before a court as well as other measures that shield immigrants.
People are turning to the EB-5 visa in light of the uncertainty of the H-1B visa program in the US. Specifically, a great percentage of students from India are considering this visa, which benefits foreign investors looking to create jobs in the US and stimulate economic growth. The debate between the Trump administration and tech companies persists with Trump standing firm in his restrictions regarding the H-1B visa and tech companies openly arguing about the visa’s importance in an innovative market.
