Breaking Canada Immigration News
On July 1st, 2017, Canada celebrated its 150th birthday. Many people in Canada were celebrating their heritage, Canadian culture, and their Canadian pride but many were celebrating their first year as an official Canadian citizen. On Canada’s 150th birthday, 53 people from more than 20 different countries recited Canada’s oath of citizenship at a ceremony in Halifax. “Becoming a citizen means I’ve been accepted into a society and a country that sees strength in diversity,” said Robinson-Enebeli. “In Canada, you can aspire to be anyone”. Robinson-Enebeli is one of the 53 new Canadian citizens who have been living in Canada as an immigrant for five years, waiting for this day what feels like his whole life.
This week a 38-year-old Canadian immigration consultant has been sentenced to three years in prison for being in connection with a scheme to illegally smuggle people into the United States. Iram Jafri from Windsor, Ontario was ordered to pay a fee of $200,000 as she pleaded guilty in February. She was operating a scheme over the last five years to help smuggle undocumented immigrants into the United States through Detroit, Michigan for exchange in money. Jafri pleaded guilty to creating and soliciting fraudulent documents. There has been proof that Jafri had assisted more than 100 people in living illegally in the United States from Canada.
Throughout any presidential election, you will always hear the whining and crying of people threatening to “move to Canada” but are they ever serious? Although the Canadian Immigration website actually crashed from the amount of traffic that occurred on the day Donald Trump was elected, not many Americans followed through with their threat. According to statistics from Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship office, the number of Americans who applied for permanent residency between January and March rose 3.6% from 2016 to 2017. Approximately 1,882 Americans applied for permanent residency in Canada in 2017. From 2016 to 2017 only a tiny 1% increase in visa and authorizations were issued to people from the US to Canada. Although the interest from Americans to immigrate to Canada was strong during the election not much of the interest was sincere.
