Reaction to the Arizona Immigration law
During the White House Rose Garden ceremony (in which members of the United States military who are originally from other countries become American citizens) American President Barack Obama said that a reform of the country’s “broken immigration system” is necessary.
“…On a day like this, we are reminded of how we must remain both a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws,” said Obama during the ceremony, “This includes fixing America’s broken immigration system.”
In particular, Obama focused on a newly-signed Arizona law that would force police to determine on the spot if the people are legal or not based on only “reasonable suspicion”. If the people questioned are unable to prove that they are legal, they will be arrested. The law was signed into effect by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer just last week.
“If we continue to fail at a Federal level, we will continue to see misguided efforts opening up around the country,” said Obama, referring to the Arizona law.
It’s estimated that 10.8 million illegal immigrants currently live and work in the United States. The United States is planning on overhauling its immigration system at some point, but they also recently passed a very controversial health care bill that might make it difficult for them to attempt passing another controversial bill. However, the passing of the recent law in Arizona has brought up the possibility in Senate that US immigration issues will be dealt with sooner rather than later and before any other serious bills, such as a climate bill.
