Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced a new policy to streamline the process of obtaining an open work permit (OWP) for foreign workers who have submitted an Expression of Interest (EOI) to a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) in these provinces.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, you must:
- have a valid work permit or one that expired after May 7, 2024, and have applied for status restoration, or
- have a pending work permit extension application or have already been approved.
- Provide a letter of employment from your current employer in Alberta, Manitoba, or Yukon, and an OWP support letter from the provincial government confirming your EOI placement.
How Does the Process Work?
- You must remain in Canada or be in the process of restoring your status to be eligible.
- All applications must be submitted online.
- Required documents include a passport, photo, employment letter, OWP support letter, and current or expired work permit. Additional documents may be required based on your individual circumstances.
- If approved, the OWP can be valid for up to two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
What About My Spouse and Children?
Your spouse or common-law partner may also apply for an OWP, and your dependent children (kindergarten to grade 12) can apply for a study permit or attend school without one if they are already in Canada.
Take Advantage of This Opportunity
This new policy provides a great opportunity for foreign workers in Alberta, Manitoba, and Yukon to secure an open work permit. Don’t miss the deadline of December 31, 2024.
