How Truck Drivers Can Get a US Work Visa in 3 Easy Steps

us work visa for truck drivers

According to the American Trucking Associations, “To move 9.2 billion tons of freight annually requires nearly 3 million heavy-duty Class 8 trucks and over 3 million truck drivers.” America needs truck drivers. If you are a foreign worker hoping to work as a truck driver in the US, you may be served best by applying for an H-2B Visa. According to drivers.com, this is the best visa option for truck drivers.

How to Obtain a US Work Visa for Truck Drivers

First, make sure you will be able to fulfill the necessary requirements to be a truck driver in the US. You’ll need a heavy vehicle driving license, and many companies will also want you to have a commercial driver’s license (CDL), which you can obtain from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and which your employer can give you information about. Many trucking schools in the United States offer training for the CDL. The minimum age for a truck driver is 18 (21 if your work will require you to cross state lines). You will also need to already have relevant work experience, and a clean driving record is ideal.

Second, secure an eligible job offer from an employer who has the necessary paperwork on their end, including a temporary labor certification for H-2B workers and successful submission and approval of Form I-129. Without a job offer and an employer to sponsor you, you can’t apply for the visa. USCIS (US Citizen and Immigration Services) states that your potential employer must also verify that the work will be temporary (under 12 months), prove a shortage of available US workers, and verify your experience in your field. The job must also offer payment equal to the prevailing wage for truck drivers where the company is located. On April 29, 2015, changes were made to the rules for H-2B visas increasing worker protections, so it is important to make sure job offers include these new requirements.

Third, according to USCIS, once your potential employer has done their part, you need to apply for a visa or admission with the U.S. Department of State (DOS) at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad.

How we get in contact or know what Trucking companies are willing to sponsor you to obtain a working VISA. Cause anything else is worth nothing if you can not get a company that will offer you a job beforehand so that everything else can have a starting point. I would like to know if there are such trucking companies. I am willing to pay for my own CDL training as my current Truck license will not be valid in the US. I will even pay my own flight. I just need the actual job. I have spend a month full time on internet, sending mails to many trucking companies, the repeat answer is that they do not sponsor drivers with a job to get a working VISA. Why is that, I am willing to sign a contract with them so that they can be sure that I stay with them for a certain period. This I believe is the biggest problem we as job seekers have.

Hi, I previously worked in Canada doing flat deck into the US. I left five years ago and I am currently looking back. I contacted my old company who told me that the LMO program has been withdrawn. I also contacted a few other companies who told me the government no longer allow foreign nationals apply for driving jobs in Canada. Can you shed any more light on this?
Thank you for your time, James.

Hi there. I am a norwegian citizen with a norwegian comercial cdl license/class a or what you call it. As far as i know, this license is not valid to drive a truck in the us.

To go to truckdriving school you need a visa

To get a h-2b visa you need a job offer.

Been in contact with many recruiters from the “big” companies, at mid american trucking show in april amongst others, but to come to a recruiter and say i have no visa and no cdl, give me a job offer? Seems wrong.

I have question? I have been a long haul driver Canada/USA for about 2 yrs. I’m trying to move to the USA permantly and drive trucks there. Problem is a lot of companies are willing to hire me but they do not want to get involved with the visa aspect. They expect me to just get a visa and they will hire me. I’ve been looking for a year for a company that will sponsor but to no avail. Is there any other way? I have no born family but my gf and her kids that I support live and are Americans but we cannot get married for now. I hate being in canada being away from them but until I find a company I see them when I get loads there where they live in the USA. Funny I support them on a candian salery and all I want is to live and work there legally so I can be with them

Hello Vishwas. It is unclear to me what you intend on doing in the US. If you plan on working, then you will need a work visa. If all you want to do is visit the US, then you will need a visitor visa. You cannot work in the US on a visitor visa.

Can you help me please, i am from Serbia, Europe, and i have a sponsor for truck driving job in the USA, but, they say that is very complicated for them to find out what they need in paper works and other legal procedures to help me get working usa visa. It is a small transport company with only 4 employees. But, they wish to “import” several foreign workers (truck drivers). I need your advise in procedures and legal matters. I am willing to pay for counselling services for this. Thank you in advanse

Hello Lara. Unfortunately will cannot help you find an employer. The best route for you to take is to look for a position on one of the many US online job boards, such as http://www.monster.com . Once you have a job offer, please get back in contact with us and we will be able to help you get the work visa that you will need.

I am in contact with one Company and see is ok,but i dont now if is not problem i was in 14.7.2012 deported from Newark.NJ International Airport! I have ban for ever or just 5years? Can I normaly with this company start legal H2B viza process? Or is problem with US Immigration? I have clean criminal record! I can fly with cash 5 000-10,000 US dollars. I think International Drive license is in USA not acceptly for work as Truck Driver? And the CDL-A drive license cost from 1500 US dollars to up

            Thanks for the answers,Nice day
