Great news for international students! USCIS has released updates on Optical Practical Training (OPT) for students and F and M visas. These changes will be especially helpful for students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields. We’ll break down the key points you need to know:
More Online Learning Options for Students
You can now take an online class or 3 credits per semester and still be considered a full-time student as long as the class doesn’t require any in-person attendance.
Transferring Schools Made Easier
Students can freely transfer between schools approved by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for the Student Exchange Visitor Program. This applies whether you’re switching programs at the same level, such as bachelor’s to bachelor’s, or moving to a higher level, such as bachelor’s to master’s.
More Time After OPT to Make Decisions
After completing OPT, students will now have a 60-day grace period to make final decisions. These include changing your education level, transferring to a new SEVP school, or applying for a different visa status during this time.
OPT for All Degree Levels
Students who finish an associate’s bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree are now eligible for post-completion OPT. This opens doors for students at various academic stages to gain practical work experience.
STEM OPT Extension
The update clarifies the timeframe for applying to STEM OPT extensions which is important for maintaining work authorization after your initial OPT.
Study Abroad Flexibility
If you’re enrolled in a SEVP school and participate in a study abroad program less than five months long, you can stay active in the SEVIS system. For programs exceeding five months, you’ll need a new Form I-20 to continue your studies upon return.
When Did These Updates Start?
These changes began on August 27, 2024, and apply to pending and new requests. If you’re an F or M visa holder considering OPT or planning your academic journey, these updates could significantly impact your options!
