The CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, in conjunction with other internet giants like the CEO of Yahoo and Chairman of Google, has launched a lobby group for American immigration reform. According to the UK Guardian, Zuckerberg’s new immigration lobby group is called “Forward US” and he wrote an editorial for the Washington Post about what the United States’ economy and the country as a whole would benefit from, including more H-1B visas.
“To lead the world in this new economy,” he writes, “we need the most talented and hardest-working people. We need to train and attract the best. We need those middle-school students to be tomorrow’s leaders. Given all this, why do we kick out the more than 40% of math and science graduate students who are not US citizens after educating them?”
Zuckerberg’s editorial goes on to recommend comprehensive immigration reform that includes more secure borders, a pathway to citizenship and the suggestion that the United States offers more H-1B work visas.
“Why do we offer so few H-1B visas for talented specialists that the supply runs out within days of becoming available each year, even though we know each of these jobs will create two or three more American jobs in return?”
What are H-1B Visas?
The H-1B visa is a specialty occupation visa reserved for the best and the brightest, allowing people who have a high level of skill and education to come and work in the United States. However, it is a capped visa where only 65,000 are given out each year and they are all snapped up within a week or so. April 1 of each year is the start date when such applications are to be submitted.
