Randy Quaid could soon become a Canadian Permanent Resident
Evi Quaid is now a Canadian citizen and has applied to sponsor her husband, actor Randy Quaid after dropping her refugee claim.
Successful refugee claims from the United States are very rare. The Quaids had said that the “Star Whackers”, who they blamed for the drug-related or accidental deaths of several actors in recent years, were after them. Initially, both of the Quaids had applied for refugee status upon reaching British Columbia late last year, but Evi Quaid dropped hers upon realizing that her father was Canadian, and therefore she could acquire Canadian citizenship.
Randy Quaid has not yet dropped his application for refugee status, but according to his lawyer, he will drop it if his sponsorship application for Canadian permanent residence is approved. At a news conference, Evi Quaid wore a Royal Canadian Mounted Police baseball cap and pinned her Canadian citizenship card to her jacket while Randy said, “Thank you Canada, thank you for the warm welcome and thank you for giving us the opportunity to live in peace.”
Canada Border Services Agency drops case
The Canada Border Services Agency withdrew its request for an inadmissibility hearing against Randy Quaid, which it initially put forth because Quaid was facing charges for a criminal offence outside of Canada. He could still face charges in California and be extradited, but the general consensus is that the Canada Border Services Agency dropped their request because the case against him in the United States is weak anyway.
Because there are no more impediments to Quaid’s case for living in Canada, it is expected that his sponsorship will be approved before his refugee claim is processed.
Sounds all like the making of a bad Hollywood movie.
