When you apply for Permanent Residency (Green Card) in the United States, you will be asked to provide your Alien Registration Number, also known as an “A-number”. Many people wonder what an A-number is and where can you find your own A-number.
An Alien Registration Number is designated for any non-citizens of the United States. It was created to help keep track of all the different immigration applications, forms, petitions, etc. that one person may submit. Once you get a one you get to keep that unique number forever.
Do I Need an Alient Registration Number?
If you are applying for a green card, regardless of which type of route, you will be assigned an A-number. Whether you’re eligible for a Green Card through family sponsorship, employment visas, investment, or refugees you will get an Alien Registration Number.
If you are intending to stay in the US for a temporary amount of time such as a visitor visa, business visa, work visa, then you will not get an Alien Registration Number.
How to Get an Alien Registration Number
There are several ways you could get an Alien Registration Number depending on which Permanent Residency route you are applying through.
Green Card Applications
Most people receive their A-number when they apply for a green card.
Marriage Green Card (inside the US)
If you’re applying for a Green Card through marriage from inside the US then your A-number will be on the receipt notice you get from the USCIS after filing the green card application form.
Marriage Green Card (outside the US)
If you’re applying for a Green Card through marriage from outside the US then your A-number will be assigned to you when you attend your interview at the US consulate.
F-1 Student Visa
If you’re in the US on an F-1 visa and you’ve received a work authorization then you will receive an A-number on that authorization.
Where is My Alien Registration Number Located?
Once you applied for a Green Card then your Alien Registration Number will be on every document sent to you by the USCIS. Most USCIS forms will have your Alien Registration Number located at the top of the first page. Your A-Number is the letter “A” followed by 8 or 9 numbers. Example: A123456789.
