A TN Visa is a type of US work visa that is one of the most ideal options for Canadians who want to work in the United States on a temporary basis. When you obtain a TN Visa, it allows you to work in the United States for a United States employer for a temporary period of about three years. You must be a Canadian Citizen to obtain a TN Visa to work in the United States, and Canadian permanent residents cannot apply for a TN Visa.
In order to obtain a TN Visa to work in the United States as a Canadian Citizen, you need to meet several specific criteria. You must be a Canadian Citizen with a valid job offer (that is temporary) for a US employer, and be able to prove that you are qualified and experienced for the job that your job offer is for.
If all this is in order, you can then apply for a TN visa!
1. Gather all of the supporting documentation you will need when you apply for your TN visa. This includes your resume, your job offer (the job offer must be on the list of NAFTA jobs that are eligible for a TN visa. That list is available here: http://www.visaplace.com/usa-immigration/tn-visa-applications.php) educational transcripts and you may also need reference letters from previous employers to prove to the visa officers that you are qualified and capable for the job.
2. Obtain a cover letter from your employer to go with your application. This cover letter will request a TN visa for yourself, and also describe the length of the jobs, terms of the job, job title and salary proving that it is consistent with the NAFTA list.
3. Fill out your TN visa application forms properly and completely. Double check to make sure you have no left any sections blank and that you have obtained and included all of the applicable information and supporting documentation.
