I am not an American citizen but I have a child who is a U.S. citizen, can I obtain legal status in the U.S., and is there a time limit on my application?

That depends on your child’s age. If your child is over the age of 21, he or she could potentially petition for you. However, if you child is under the age of 21, you will have to wait. Of course your child has to be a US Citizen in the first place which seems to be the case for you.
