Can you get into Canada if you have a DUI?

Asked by: 664 views Canadian Immigration, Other, USA Immigration

My new boyfriend has a DUI on his record from three years ago in the state of California. We are planning a ski trip to Canada and I have been told that he is going to get stopped at the border. I do not want my vacation to be ruined. Please tell me if he will not be allowed into Canada because he has a DUI.

    Hello Jessica
Thanks for the post. You can get into Canada with a DUI but you may need to apply for a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP). A TRP will allow you to enter Canada with a criminal record. You can get a TRP at the Canadian Consulate or at the border. If you apply at the border there is some risks of refusal in which case you will not be admitted. Here are some blogs we did about being denied entry to Canada that may help.

No, i don’t think he can get into the Canada ..For your information, If you have been convicted of impaired driving, Canadian government is very strict by denying the entrance.

You can file for a Temporary Resident Permit at a Canadian visa office or when you arrive at the border. There is a filing fee for this which is around $200. It will take up to 6 months for processing and a personal interview may be required.
