US Republican Candidate Praises Canadian Immigration Policies

At the end of September, United States Republican Candidate Mitt Romney spoke highly of the Canadian immigration points system, which is used to determine if immigrants qualify for the Skilled Worker program. Romney said that he doesn’t believe in allowing illegal immigrants in-state tuition to study at universities and colleges in Texas, but instead thinks the immigration system should focus on the skills and education levels of immigrants.

“I understand that Canada and Australia have policies that work pretty well. If you’ve gone to high school you get points, if you’ve gone to college you get points…you might even say that if you can afford to buy a house or a condominium in Florida, you get points,” said Romney.

Currently, the majority of immigrants to the United States (66 per cent) are as a result of family reunification programs, while refugees and humanitarian claims make up 17 per cent, and employment skills make up only 13 per cent. There is a large push towards immigration reform in the United States, and immigration might become a large debate in the upcoming presidential election in 2012. Lately, important immigration issues have been cast aside and not given enough priority over other important issues such as the economy and environment.
