Latest changes to the Foreign Worker Program
If you haven’t heard, the temporary foreign worker program in Canada, which allows employers to bring foreign workers into the country to work jobs that Canadians aren’t available for, is going to be experiencing some big changes.
These changes will make the process more expensive, while also ensuring that the employers aren’t displacing Canadian workers when they bring foreign workers to the country.
Changes to the temporary foreign worker program
- If a company says that speaking a language is a requirement of a job it’s offering, the language can only be English or French from now on.
- Effective immediately, the Accelerated Labour Market Opinion program is not available, and employers must pay foreign workers the prevailing wage as the existing wage flexibility has been eliminated.
- Employers who hire temporary foreign workers must have a plan in place to eventually transition to a Canadian workforce, and they need to explain this in their LMO application while also answering questions that ensure the temporary foreign workers will not be displacing Canadians.
- There will also be a change to the fees associated with temporary foreign workers, as the fees for a work permit are going to increase and there will now be a processing fee for Labour Market Opinions.
