Citizenship and Immigration Canada Adds Skilled Trade Program to Federal Skilled Worker Program

Changes coming to Federal Skilled Worker Program

According to a press release, Citizenship and Immigration Canada have announced that they will be creating a separate, streamlined program for skilled tradespersons in addition to a more modernized Federal Skilled Worker Program that will be unveiled later in 2012.

This particular program will focus on trades such as construction, manufacturing, service industries and transportation. The Federal Skilled Worker Program recently underwent a thorough review that found the program needed to be more accessible to people in trade occupations, and thus the Skilled Trade Program was added.

The Skilled Trade Program will be implemented and explained in greater detail later, presumably when the revamped Federal Skilled Worker Program is introduced.

The Federal Skilled Worker Program relies on a 100-point grid to assess the ability of a person to suit Canada’s economic needs, but the press release says that more emphasis would be put on experience and training rather than education for the Skilled Trade Program. Language requirements similar to those in the Federal Skilled Worker Program would still be in effect.

“Above all, our Government remains focused on promoting economic growth and long-term prosperity,” said Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney in the press release. “Attracting skilled tradespeople is important for maintaining Canada’s momentum in the global economy.”
