Cancelled Skilled Worker Applications Can Apply For Open Work Permits As Provincial Nominees

Provincial Nominee Programs allow applications for Federal Skilled Workers

Federal skilled workers whose applications were cancelled after the Federal Government moved to legislate those applications away to reduce the backlog. Applicants’ whose applications had been sitting in the system waiting processing since before 2008 were effectively erased, but many of the Provincial Nominee Programs began reaching out to those applicants under the Federal Skilled Worker Backlog Reduction Pilot Program.

To help reduce the backlog, provinces and territories (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and the Northwest Territories) were able to pick applicants whose applications were part of the backlog for their Provincial Nominee Programs based on the applicants’ work experience and their intended destination.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada has announced that as of November 5th, 2012, foreign nationals who were nominated by a Provincial Nominee Program that is participating in the Federal Skilled Worker pilot can apply for an open work permit, 1500 of which are available per province.

To be eligible to come to Canada under the backlog program, applicants must be a participant in the Federal Skilled Worker Backlog Reduction Pilot, as well as have a letter from the nominating province that confirms this and promises the work permit issued will only be for that province.
