PR card expired outside of Canada

Permanent resident cards expire every five years. Permanent residents in Canada must carry these cards as identification, they allow them to return to Canada after traveling. But often, these cards are allowed to expire outside of Canada and usually it is just because the permanent resident overlooked it or could not return back to Canada in time to renew the card. When this happens, the permanent resident card (PR card) has expired outside of Canada. PR Card Renewal

What can you do if your permanent resident card has expired outside of Canada? It may seem tricky, because you cannot renew your card outside of Canada but you cannot return to Canada with an expired card, either.

Apply for a travel document when your permanent residency card expires outside of Canada

A travel document is a special document that will allow you to return to Canada even with an expired permanent resident card. You can apply for a travel document at the Canadian consulate in the country where you are staying. But you will still have to prove that you have met the residency requirement in order to obtain one of these documents, just like when you apply to renew your card.

The residency requirement for maintaining your permanent resident status in Canada is living in Canada for two years of the last five years, or spending no more than three years outside of Canada.

If you cannot prove that you have met this requirement or you know you have not, you may have to make a humanitarian and compassionate case.

Are you having trouble with your permanent resident card? Do you need to renew it, or are you facing difficulties like not having met the permanent residency requirement? We are here to help you. Give us a call at the number above for an assessment of your case and assistance.
