Want to Study in Canada? Here are Maclean’s 5 Best Universities
Foreign students who are planning to study in Canada can access the university rankings published by Maclean’s, the popular Canadian weekly magazine. Although these lists have their challengers, they are useful as a starting point for checking out various schools and deciding where to apply. After all, this is one of the most important and expensive decisions students will ever make.
Maclean’s considers three main categories of university:
- medical and doctoral schools that offer a broad range of PhD programs
- comprehensive schools that offer undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees, and research options
- primarily undergraduate schools with few graduate programs
The ranking tool incorporates information such as:
- student/faculty ratio
- student awards
- student services
- research dollars
- results of reputational survey
The Globe and Mail publishes a Canadian University Report. The 2011 report included a survey on where the country’s top achievers went to university both for undergraduate, MBAs, and graduate and professional degrees. There is also information on where most graduates land jobs and on Canada’s ranking on the international university scene.
Three Best Medical and Doctoral Universities
Maclean’s has ranked these three schools at the top of the medical and doctoral category:
McGill ranks higher in the student/faculty ratio and in the percentage of its budget dedicated to scholarships and bursaries. UT is first in library resources and is edging upward in the reputational survey. Its law school ranks first in the country.
It should be noted that both UT and UBC place in the top ten worldwide according to QS World University Rankings. McGill did make it onto the list of the top twenty. UT was also in sixteenth place on the Times Higher Education Global University Rankings. These international listings are important for foreign students choosing their universities.
Best Comprehensive School
The best school for a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs with research opportunities is Simon Fraser University (SFU) in British Columbia. Spread over three campuses in the Vancouver area, this university offers 145 academic programs for its 35,000 students. SFU’s Strategic Research Plan is funded by an impressive $90 million.
Best Undergraduate School
For fifteen years out of 21, Mount Allison University (MtA) in Sackville, New Brunswick has been the undergraduate school at the top of the Maclean’s list. It offers degrees in Arts, Commerce, Science, Fine Arts and Music, and has produced a record number of Rhodes Scholars. MtA’s Owens Art Gallery exhibits works of world-renowned faculty and alumni.
