Toronto Rabbi accused of Immigration Fraud though Immigration Law Firm in NYC

According to the Toronto Star a Rabbi in Toronto is accusing of committing immigration fraud for which he has been extradited. The allegations are that Rabbi Avraham David, a dual citizen of Canada and the US, duped thousands of immigration applicants though his immigration law firm in New York.

Rabbi David allegedly came to Canada in 2006 to avoid prosecution in New York. It seems that he charged people very high sums of money for services never rendered.  According to the article, he has been extradited to the US to face prosecution.

This is a very sad tale of immigration fraud, this time on a potentially massive scale, by someone in a position of trust. It is not clear whether Rabbi David is or was a licensed lawyer but as a Rabbi, he certainly, was held to a higher standard of trust.

The lesson here is that regardless of title, position or appearances, immigration clients MUST do their due diligence before hiring an immigration professional to handle their applications. There are no guarantees of success of course, but the first line of defence starts with who you choose to be your representative. Be careful!
