“I’ll be doing a great service to our country,” states Republican candidate Donald Trump, responding to celebrity comments that an exodus to Canada will result if the current leader of the GOP nomination takes the Oval Office.
Of course, there have been many occasions in which an existential threat appears to spur citizens of the United States to travel north for sanctuary.
However, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau noted, “the population gap” has remained unchanged over the years. Part of the reason that an exodus is unlikely to occur has to do with Canadian immigration law. Similar to the United States, Canada bars foreign nationals from easily obtaining Canadian citizenship, limiting stays to finite periods of time regardless of political conditions in the United States.
Americans looking to escape a potential reality in which Donald Trump has been voted President of the United States better start planning their trip north soon. Similar to the United States, U.S. visitors to Canada are allowed to stay for up to six months at a time and cannot seek employment within the country during the stay.
As a result, those wishing to waltz into Canada last minute will likely be disappointed that they won’t be able to stick around as residents during a possible Trump regime.
Instead, those looking to immigrate to Canada should browse through the multitude of programs run by the Canadian government to attract business and investment within the borders. Also, the North America Free Trade Agreement, which Trump threatens to destroy, outlines specific conditions in which Americans may seek employment within Canada. Typically, these involve having education and experience in highly technical fields that Canadian employers require for their businesses.
For younger Americans considered moving north because of Trump, there are many opportunities to come to Canada to visit and study at one of the nation’s large university and college campuses, located mostly near large metropolitan areas.
Regardless of if you’re Lena Dunham or another celebrity looking to escape Trump, you’ll need to consider the fact that Canada has its own immigration laws that prevent foreign nationals from becoming immediate Canadian citizens
