On May 21st, 2024, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) began sending invitations to potential sponsors for the highly anticipated Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). They aim to issue 35,700 invitations and approve 20,500 applications.
PGP 2024: Who’s Eligible?
This PGP round will only consider potential sponsors who submitted their interest forms in 2020. This marks the fourth year in a row with this restriction. Invitations will be sent randomly via email, so those who applied in 2020 should check their inboxes starting May 21st.
What To Do After Receiving An ITA from the Parent and Grandparent Program
After receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program (PGP), you must act quickly and efficiently as you have a limited time (usually 60 days) to complete and submit your application. Here’s a breakdown of the steps to take:
- Gather Required Documents: Review the document checklist included in the ITA and gather all necessary paperwork. This will likely include proof of identity, relationship to the sponsor, financial documents, medical exams, police certificates, and other supporting documentation as outlined in the ITA.
- Complete the Application Forms: Fill out the application forms accurately and completely. Be sure to double-check all information before submitting to avoid delays or errors.
- Pay Processing Fees: Pay the required processing fees for both the sponsorship application and the permanent residency application. Failure to pay these fees will result in your application being rejected.
- Submit Your Application: Once you have gathered all the required documents, completed the forms, and paid the fees, submit your application online through the government’s designated portal. Make sure to submit within the allotted time frame to avoid missing your chance to apply.
- Awaiting Processing: After submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation message. The processing time for PGP applications can vary, so be patient and wait for further communication from the government.
- Potential Additional Requests: During processing, the government may request additional documents or information. Respond promptly to any requests to avoid delays in processing.
- Final Decision: Once a decision has been made on your application, you will be notified. If approved, you will receive instructions on next steps, such as providing your passport for visa issuance. If rejected, you may have options for appeal, depending on the reason for rejection.
Remember, thorough preparation and timely submission are crucial for a successful PGP application. If you have any questions or concerns, seek assistance from an immigration lawyer or consultant.
What If I’m Not Selected for the PGP?
If you’re not selected for the PGP, don’t lose hope! The Super Visa offers a great alternative, allowing parents and grandparents to enjoy extended visits to Canada for up to five years at a time. You can even extend their stay for an additional two years. A major advantage of the Super Visa is that, unlike the PGP, you can submit an application any time of the year.
IRCC targets a 112-day processing time for Super Visa applications, meaning a quicker decision for those eager to reunite with loved ones.
