Good changes to United States Visa system? Don’t hold your breath.

Attracting more foreign skilled workers with United States visas

The Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy organization, has released a new policy brief that recommends that the United States visa system undergo certain changes, including automatic Green Cards for foreign students who graduate from math and science programs as well as creating a digital United States visa system. The report suggests that United States visa approvals focus on skilled foreign workers that bring more technology and innovation to the country.

Only 6.5% of United States visas are granted to skilled workers, in comparison with Canada’s 36%.

More United States visas in the H-1B visa stream

The report also suggested increasing the H-1B visa cap to accommodate more foreign students who graduate from these programs, because there are not usually enough to meet the demand. The Brookings Institition also suggested more EB-5 visas and more O-1 visas available to people who invest at least $500,000 or have special abilities in certain areas like the arts, education or business, respectively.

What I think about these proposed United States Visa Changes?

All good. Sure.

But I am not holding my breath hoping that these recommendations will be accepted. The trend in immigration these days is towards enforcement not accomidation despite what the US economy needs.

In our practice, we find it to be an uphill battle in getting US Visas approved. But that is our job. And the “boxing gloves” aren’t coming off just yet.
