If you immigrate to Canada as a live-in caregiver, are you obligated to stay in the same career?

    Hi Tara,

Thanks for your question. If you come to Canada as a live-in caregiver, you are obligated to stay in the same career unless you apply for a new work permit.

As well, you can only work for the employer whose name is on your work permit. Your work permit could be cancelled if you work for anyone other than the person named on your work permit. You can’t even work for someone else just to try things out.

Before you begin working for someone else, you must apply for a new work permit at least 30 days before the expiry date of your work permit.

With your application for a new work permit, you must submit:

    1. a copy of a positive LMO, a document your new future employer must obtain before he can hire you; and
    2. a signed employment contract with your new employer.

    Hope this helps!
