My soon to be wife and I are both citizens of Kansas but, are planning to get married in Toronto due to their recognition of gay marriage. Can we legally be married in Toronto if we are not Canadian citizens?

    Hello

You can legally be married in Toronto I believe but you would have to first verify this with a Family Lawyer not an Immigration Lawyer. However, if you do get married in Toronto, you have to decide where you want to live. Do you want to move back to the US or stay in Canada? If you want to stay in Canada, you would have to qualify for immigration. And being just married does not give you legal status in Canada. You would have to be sponsored or apply as a Skilled Worker or as temporary resident. If you were marrying a Canadian then she or he would be albeit to sponsor you potentially. But in this case you are both Americans.

    Good luck!
