Did you know that Canada has several different programs available for business immigration? This can include investors, self-employed persons or even entrepreneurs. One example of how Canada is investing in innovation and the economy is the new Start Up Visa, which allows entrepreneurs to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents if they have the right type of business idea and can secure funding.
This Start Up Visa was only introduced in April, and is currently running like a pilot program. There are only about 2750 of these visas available every year for the entrepreneurs and their families, and this will continue for five years. At the end of five years, the government will determine if the program is popular enough to be made permanent.
Similar to the television show Dragon’s Den, applicants for this visa must pitch their ideas to investors, and if the investors like their idea they can begin the permanent residency process. They must be able to secure and investment of at least $75,000 from an angel investor or $200,000 from an approved venture capital organization in order to qualify.
Other requirements that must be met include having intermediate knowledge of French or English, as well as completing one year of post-secondary education.
